Ernests captures first win at Wimbledon

After two hours and 53 minutes, Ernests finally managed to subdue John Isner’s stubborn resistance to progress to the second round of the Championships at Wimbledon.

The final scoreline of 7-5 7-5 6-7(3) 7-6(6) reflected the difficulty both players faced in dealing with each others’ serve, as evidenced by the total of 48 aces served in this match.

Both players were equally formidable on serve, with Ernests winning 84% of his first serve points and Isner 75% on his.

The first two sets were virtually carbon copies of each other as both players held serve until the eleventh game, where Ernests broke Isner to lead by 6*-5 and subsequently served out each set.

The third set appeared to follow the same pattern, but Isner seemed to be having no more of it, and held serve to force a tiebreaker. Ernests quickly went down a minibreak and was unable to establish a lead as Isner concluded the set with another point won on Ernests’ serve, winning the tiebreak 7-3.

Ernests’ serve, so infallible earlier in the match, began to waver in the fourth set as he offered two break points to Isner. However, he managed to save both of them, and the set was also resolved in a tiebreak. Both players traded several minibreaks, and Ernests saved a set point at 5*-6 on his own serve before converting his first match point at 7-6* on the Isner serve.

The next opponent for Ernests will be the world #2, Rafael Nadal, who looked mightily impressive in his triumph at the Artois Championships in the lead-up to Wimbledon. Nadal handily dispatched of German qualifier, Andreas Beck, in straight sets in a Centre Court match earlier today.

“I want to go with (the) attitude of a winner,” Ernests commented on the upcoming match against Nadal. “I’m going to try to be there and to play as best I can, and we’ll see how it goes.”

Nadal characteristically downplayed his own chances and was generous with his praise: “I have got to play a very tough opponent – one of the worst people to play in the second round. Gulbis is a very good player, very aggressive and has a very good serve. You need tough games as a tournament progresses but I’d rather be eased into a match like this.”

This second-round match is expected to be played on Thursday.

  1. Gratulations :) Ernests is getting better and better!

  2. I was at the match today and it was extremely good, with both players serving very well indeed, both were hindered by some strange line calls at various points in the match. Bizarre mixture of people in the crowd, at least five of whom appeared to be convinced the Ernests was in fact called Eunice (which is a girls name in any case)! Nadal looked very strong though, and it will certainly be a difficult task to beat him, but it may be possible.
