Toronto qualifying marks return to hard courts

-

Ernests is scheduled to kick-start his US Open preparation by playing in the qualifying rounds for the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

He also made the main draw as a qualifier last year, only to lose in the first round to David Ferrer. Ernests is defending 20 points in this Masters Series event.

Joining him in the qualifying field would be fellow 19 year-old, Marin Cilic of Croatia, and American Robby Ginepri, who beat Ernests in the quarterfinals of the Las Vegas tournament in March.

The Rogers Cup features a 56-man field, with seven of those slots going to qualifiers. The players signed up for qualifying three weeks before the tournament commences and the draw will be made on Friday, 18th of July.

As Ernests is also ranked fifth in the alternates list, there is a small chance that he might make the main draw without having to play qualifying. However, the occurrence looks unlikely as it would require at least four more men who are already in the main draw to pull out and for the special exemption slot to be cleared.
