Davis Cup: The prodigal son returns

The Latvian Tennis Union has announced that Ernests will play in the upcoming Davis Cup tie against Bulgaria, according to the Latvian news portal, esports.lv.

This reverses Ernests’ earlier decision to skip this tie, which was announced in May by Ģirts Dzelde, the team captain.

This tie will be played on 10-12 July in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, on outdoor red clay.

On Monday, Ernests will join his teammates – Deniss Pavlovs, Andis Juška, Kārlis Lejnieks and Adrians Žguns – in Plovdiv, after which the four-member squad will be officially named.

Ernests last played in the Davis Cup during the Group I relegation tie against Italy last year.

He won both of his singles matches but Latvia was unable to score another point against a formidable Italian team and was demoted to Group II in 2009.

Ernests’ teammates, however, did not miss him in their first-round tie against Moldova earlier this year after easily whitewashing their opponents 5-0 for a spot in the second round.

Bulgaria is touted to be a step up from Moldova, with wunderkind Grigor Dimitrov amongst their ranks.

However, the 18 year-old Dimitrov suffered a grave knee injury in his first-round match at Wimbledon last week and it is unlikely that he will be able to compete in the tie.

Latvia defeated Bulgaria easily the last time they played against each other, but that tie was played on fast carpet in Jūrmala, giving Latvia the advantage of surface and home support.

The winning nation from next weekend’s tie will progress to the third round in September, where they will meet either Lithuania or Slovenia for a spot in Group I of the Europe/Africa Zone in 2010.

Ernests will then take a week off as he makes his way to the USA for the hardcourt Indianapolis Tennis Championships, which begins on 19 July.

  6. can someone translate this:

Kristaps Gulbis, kurš nesen Latvijā atgriezies no studijām Maiami, ASV, golfa sacensībās Latvijā startēja pirmo reizi, lai gan, cik var spriest no internetā atrodamās informācijas, ASV viņš šur tur piedalījies. “Amerikā ir forši. Daudz golfa laukumu.

    • It talks about Kristaps and the Latvian Amateur Golf Championships. He just came back from Miami – I think he attends high school there – and if I read it correctly, he said that he played a lot of golf while in the States. Nothing terribly exciting, I’m afraid.

  7. I once read that he attends a golf academy in florida. don’t know if that’s true though

  8. so he’s aspiring to becoming a pro golfer?

  9. is anyone going to the tie? Photos would be much appreciated :)

    thanks,

    Go Erniee

  10. i would love that too.
    photos, photos!!!
    GO LATVIA!!
    GO ERNIE!!
