Double act sees Latvia through to third round
Ernests and Deniss Pavlovs sealed Latvia’s spot in the third round of the Davis Cup after winning the doubles rubber in straight sets. The first four games of the match were played on Saturday before bad weather halted play, forcing it to be resumed on Sunday morning.

The decisive win in the doubles ensured Latvia an unassailable three-point lead against Bulgaria.
Andis Juška and Adrians Žguns were fielded in the dead singles rubbers, with Juška defeating Valentin Dimov in straight sets but Žguns falling to Tihomir Grozdanov for Bulgaria’s sole point of the tie.
They will next face Slovenia, who defeated Lithuania over the weekend.
Latvia will host the September tie, which is likely to be played in Ernests’ hometown of Jūrmala.
He will now head to the United States for the American summer hard court swing, where he is scheduled to play in Indianapolis (July 19-26) before travelling to Los Angeles and Washington DC.

Zahirah,another question for you. DO you know what alternate position Ernests has in Rogers tournament in Canada? I know the current entry list has a few players that for sure will not compete.So maybe he can slip in the field without playing in qualifier’s. Thanks.
Hmm, he was #20-something on the alternates list initially and that’s awfully far down. He’d need practically half of the original main draw to pull out to make it in that way.. So the qualies look pretty unavoidable at this point, I’m afraid.

Might need to see if he even chooses to play qualies in Canada. He’s signed up for 3 straight tournaments before that and seemed pretty definite about playing qualies in Cincy, which is right after Montreal. Will confirm soon-ish when the qualifying entry list is released.
Yeh, wasn’t he like the late 20’s i thought… 27 maybe… YAY Ernests got throught to the third round finally in my head it will count for a third round! Haha
i don`t know if im imagine this or i really heard that the davis cup give points for the atp ranking?
That is true, but only for countries in the World Group and the World Group playoffs. The Latvian players did not qualify for the points.

ohh i thought the latvian players had recieved some points too because i saw the ranking and ernests is ranked 70, and the last week he was ranked 74 or so, so i thought it might be for the DC points, but they didn`t qualify for the points so… its just luck.
When Erno’s rank goes up, it’s not necessarily because he gained points but because people who used to be ranked above him lost more points than he did.
For example, this time last year we had the Amersfoort, Kitzbuehel, Umag and Indianapolis tournaments. Points gained from those tournaments in 2008 were dropped by the ATP ranking calculator at the start of this week. Erno didn’t play any of these tournaments last year, and so he had nothing to lose.

ahh yes, i got you now, you`re right, i saw the tournament schedule and like you said ernests didn`t play indianapolis. and i think he didn`t play los angeles and washington either so the next weeks are just to gain points.
i know this is a very “fangirl“ thing to say and probably is the effect of boringness (and alcohol, no just kidding) but im gonna say this anyway. there`s a song of radiohead called “`house of card“ and the first line of the song goes like this: “i don`t wanna be your friend, i just wanna be your lover“. while i was listening i was thinking how cool would be if ernests would tell you that, with his sweet voice and his sexy accent: i don`t wanna be your friend, i just wanna be your lover“. i know, i have a big imagination.
